Abstract. This paper is concerned with approximation on variable spaces associated with a general exponent function and a general bounded Borel measure on an open subset of .We mainly consider approximation by Bernstein type linear operators. Under an assumption of log-HΓΆlder continuity of the exponent function , we verify a conjecture raised previously about the uniform boundedness of various new approximation spaces. Unfortunately, the theory of E-spaces, elaborated in [10] within the framework of abstract Abelian group theory (see also [1, Chapter 7]), gives explicit practical results only for power-type parameters Ο•(t) = tΞΈand E= L q, while the further generalization

It is of interest to point out that the (2) construction was independently considered by applications of extrapolation theory to classical analysis. This new approach to real analysis stresses the use of the subject in applications, showing how the principles and theory of real analysis can be applied in various settings. Applications cover approximation by polynomials, discrete dynamical systems, differential equations, Fourier series and physics, Fourier series and approximation, wavelets, and convexity and optimization.
